cannabis packaging trends

Approximately 52% of Americans will have tried marijuana by the end of 2022. It's gone mainstream due to its increasing legality, and that means more people are going to be buying it from legal cannabis shops! If you own a dispensary or cannabis company, this is good news for you.

It's an increasingly competitive field, however, so you may have to start making changes as more brands join the competition. Have you considered upgrading your cannabis packaging?

We're here to talk about a few cannabis packaging trends that you can try utilizing for your brand. Read on to learn more.

Vintage-Inspired Packaging

If there's one thing that's always true about trends, it's that they always come back around eventually. From clothing to music, "vintage" is always "in." Cannabis packaging design is no exception.

"Vintage" in this case refers to incredibly old-style packaging. We're talking about apothecary-inspired packaging, interesting glass jars, and a fairly monochromatic and neutral color scheme.

This style of packaging is both classy and whimsical and it tends to appeal to people who prefer a more "refined" appearance to their cannabis purchases.

Minimalist Packaging

Minimalism is another trend that keeps coming back around, especially in the cannabis sphere.

Minimalism is subtle, inoffensive, and classy. Often, these packages will be purely white or black with just the brands, and cannabis strains are written on the front of the package. It's no-frills and many people who don't involve themselves in "cannabis culture" prefer how neutral it is.

It's also very easy to produce and it looks great on a shelf. Minimalist packaging designs always match, so they'll make any cannabis shop look more put together.

Cartoonish Old-School Packaging

On the other end of the spectrum, "over-the-top" and cartoonish cannabis packaging is also trending.

The cannabis packaging can't contain actual cartoon characters (as they may be too "appealing" to children and teenagers), but bright colors, fun fonts, and cartoonish details like suns and rainbows are acceptable.

These designs are bright and colorful and they're reminiscent of the seventies and eighties. They're fun!

Cannabis strains and brands with quirky names tend to pair well with this style of packaging design.

Sustainable Packaging

Sustainability is a hot topic right now, and for good reason. Many people are recognizing that their products aren't eco-friendly, and they want to make a change. While packaging might not seem like a big deal, it makes a difference.

Wasteful packaging does not align with cannabis culture most of the time.

So what does sustainable mean in this context? Use as little plastic as possible. Opt for biodegradable packaging and packaging that's free from harmful chemicals.

Avoid any excessive and unnecessary packaging, like thick single-use plastic.
